Benny Welter-Nolan is an interdisciplinary artist and leader based in Kjipuktuk/Halifax, Mi’kma’ki/Nova Scotia, unceded territory of the Mi'kmaq people, and was raised in Nogojiwanong/Peterborough, Ontario, territory of the Mississauga Ojibway of Curve Lake First Nation. Since receiving their BFA from NSCAD University in 2011 they have worked at Impact Organizations of Nova Scotia, the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre’s Reconciliation Initiative: Every One Every Day, Visual Arts Nova Scotia, Saint Mary's University Art Gallery, the Centre for Craft Nova Scotia and as a co-director of Hermes Artist-Cooperative. Their art has been shown at Eyelevel Gallery, the Peterborough Art Gallery, Anna Leonowens Gallery, White Rabbit Open Air Artist Residency, the Centre for Art Tapes and Hermes.
Experimenting with media, textiles, installation and performative works, my work seeks comfort with a sense of humour and futility. Collaborating with those close to me, I examine the landscape of relationships, change, and uncertainty.
